Study Abroad: Learn Arabic in Egypt
Students' Feedback

Lucie-Kay Desthuis-Francis, Political Consultant, U.S.A., October 2007-January 2008
Arab Academy offers a great intensive Arabic language program. The small classes and almost personalised teaching is excellent and covers all aspects of learning a language. Each lesson targets the different facets of learning a language: expanding ones vocabulary, reading and comprehension, grammar, and speaking skills. This thorough and
rigorous learning process, coupled with the good nature of all the teachers at the Academy, gives for a wonderful and unique learning environment. I very much enjoyed my time in Cairo and at the Academy and would recommend this program to any one looking for a rigorous yet friendly place to learn Arabic.

Anne Renaudineau , International Communications Project Manager, Germany, December 2007
Thanks to the two-week intensive course I took at Arab Academy I dramatically improved my level of both written and spoken Arabic. I particularly appreciated the commitment and flexibility of the teachers.

Tanya Meghani, University of Houston, August 2007
My experience with the Arab Academy has been amazing, I am so happy to have learned so much and thank you for it!! I would definitely reccomend these courses to others.

Debra Smith, An English language teacher in the United States, Missouri: attended the following session: July 2007
This is my third summer in a row to spend a month studying at Arab Academy. That alone should tell you how satisfied I am with the place and the people.

Antonio Losavio, University of California Berkeley, English Major, Louisville, Kentucky, USA, July 2007
I am extremely satisfied with my experience at the Arab Academy.
I can honestly say that i have learned more Arabic in my two months with Arab academeythan i did after a year at my university. It was very effective to divide the classes into reading, vocabulary, grammar, and conversation. Even my friends who speak arabic as their native language have told me that i have reached an impressive level after just two months. I owe it to the Arab acedemy.

Kristine Hassan, college student, American/Egyptian, July 2007
I especially enjoyed Arab Aceademy because rather than just teaching colloquial arabic, Arab Academy focuses on encouraging its students to use the language from the beginning. One of my biggest problems with Arabic before entering Arab Academy was my fear of speaking Arabic to others. Here I fell that I have improved greatly. I understand much more due to the fact that most of class time is spent with a focus on casual conversation. I enjoyed the stories we read because we were able to build a conversation around them, enforcing the new vocabulary. I particularly liked learning the lyrics to a few popular Arabic songs for now I find myself actually understanding the words to the countless songs I have. All of this has given me more confidence to continue learning Arabic, especially with taking that very important leap of trying to speak to others in Arabic. Thank you Arab Academy!

Geoffrey Weichselbaum, Belgian, International Politics, July 2007
The quality of teaching is very high and the education process can be continued online as the curriculum is the same.  This is invaluable for students travelling or working abroad.

Margaret S. Harris, retired teacher and legal assistant, Des Moines, Iowa, USA, July 2007

This is my second experience at AA. It has been good. I miss the outings and wish this could have been discussed.
As always everyone I have met is very nice and try to answer questions.
They have be extremely patience.

I like being in Cairo and the experience of being in the culture, hearing the language.
More observations on my teacher evaluation.

Vazquez Alfonso, Employee in an Organisation for Culture Issues, Switzerland, March 2007

My experience in arab academy was very very good.
Everybody was very very kind and warm to me. I felt very well.I had a great time meanwhile the lessons. The lessons were very interesting
and funny too. I hate boring lessons! I think everybody does :) I learned a lot in one
month. I didnt expect i would be that much. Thank you.

Inshallah i will come back in december and stay for six month. I want to thank you for teaching and treating me so well and i wish you all the
best for the future.

Amy Gurtler, Washington, DC, February 2007
This has been my third visit to Egypt and I've enjoyed it very much. I hope to return again. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone interested in studying Arabic. They have a lot of good materials and they can adjust the program to meet your needs--whether you prefer to study Egyptian colloquial or fusha or both. The class sizes are very small (often one-on-one with the teacher) and this allows you to get very individualized attention. The teachers care about their students and there seems to be a good atmosphere of teamwork and cooperation among the teachers.

Barbara Mcdonald, Histolgist, Seattle,Wa, February 2007
The best thing I can say about my experince here at Arab Academy is that the teachers are so patient and they did everything possible to make my learning experience enjoyable.
Arab Academy is a very postive place to learn Arabic the extra trips I took around Cairo were educational as well as fun, I just wish I had more than a month here to study.

JOAN ANTON VENTURA SALA, TEACHER, SPAIN, February 2007

Merci.

Cornelia Boesch, Switzerland, February 2007.
am interested in Arab culture and language and have therefore been travelling in the Arab peninsula and Egypt for 3 months. Was looking for a school where I could continue to learn Arabic and found Arabacademy on the Net.
The school is very strict and 4 hours a day with just as much homework challenging. But I think this is what is necessary to learn and especially to start to speak the Arab language. What would have been helpful at the beginning of the course would have been a short introduction to the system of the online courses and to each teacher in English.
My Arabic is not good enough to understand everything in Arabic and the first few days were unnecessarily tyring because I was beeing tought a lot and also had to find out myself how the teaching system at Arabacademy works (i.e. some reading then diction, then grammar, then conversation). A short leaflet written in English would probably have been enough.
I am planning to continue with Arabacademy online as there is no school in Switzerland that teaches Modern Standard Arabic.
A big thanks to the teachers for their imput

Robert Meles, Switzerland, February 2007.

After finishing my studies at the university of law in zurich, I practiced law for several years,
then started a sucessfull business with my partners.

In love languages in general, in my youth I went to a special high school for modern
languages, where I studies italian and spanish for 5 years.
Now I also speak fluently portugese, dutch, german, english an french. Arabic is a beautifull
but for me by far, the most difficult language I learnt. The grammar and the writing is
difficult, but can be mastered. The biggest problem for me is the arabic vocabulary,
it is incredibly big and has absolutely no similarities with the european languages.
There are at least five arabic words with a similar meaning for every english word.

The arabic acadamy programm is very nice, while not completly new. The other programms we worked with
have used also focused on everyday situations. Very good is the follow up programm for
the online students. For my taste there ist a little bit too much grammar and not enough conversation
training. Overall I was very happy with the program. An overall very friendly an professional school.

best regards robert meles

It was a fantastic time at Arab Academy, and although I had some problems at the beginning to get used to the lessons and to speak Arabic (because I didn't do Skype at home), I'm very sad that I have to leave. The teachers at Arab Academy are brillant and they helped me a lot in improving my Arabic skills. They all explain new words and grammar in an understandable easy Arabic and my fears that I wouldn't understand anything were totally unnecessary. I also greatly enjoyed the visits-program in the afternoons because it's much better than visiting the places in a tourist group and it gives you more exposure to the Arabic language. I hope I can come back some time to continue the studies at Arab Academy.

Rahmat Hindiarta Junior, Indonesian Diplomat Cairo, January 2007
Learning Arabic language in the Arab Academy (AA) is very interesting. I have proved that for twice. Firstly, when I was one of participants in Arabic short course as the Arabic teacher which was held in October 2003 by the Indonesian State Islamic University of Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta, in cooperation with AA. Secondly, when I was in internship in the Indonesian Embassy in Cairo as the young Indonesian diplomat, which the course was held in 1 November-15 December 2006, every afternoon after work.
Of course the chance after work is tiring, however learning Arabic in AA remains very interesting. Why? Because of some following reasons;
Professionalism
The students in AA are free to choose any topic of any level they want and the AA’s team will prepare it as soon as possible. The AA cares very much for the students’ interests and it is ready to fulfill any students’ request in order to reach their highest goals in learning Arabic. I chose the Arabic language for politics, and I knew some of the materials were not prepared because it was relating to my interests. However, the team has prepared it well, soon after I requested.
Friendly teachers
Teacher is the most important elements in learning process. And the AA has many qualified teachers to deliver any materials relating to the Arabic language. They are graduates from the Egyptian reputable universities and have the excellent capability in Arabic. The interaction with them will help the students to develop their Arabic language skill and to accelerate the growth of Arabic taste. I always communicate not only with my teacher but also with the other teachers before and/or after the session.
Conducive situation
The AA is located in the very strategic location. It isn’t far from the centre of Cairo but it is avoided from the city’s noises. It is located in the diplomatic and business environment. In the class, I can focus on lesson delivered and develop my listening skill despite my tired condition. Improving listening skill is the most interesting and challenging skills. I like it very much!
Sophisticated device
AA is backed up by sophisticated device. And the learning process in the AA is delivered in two ways, online and face-to-face. The device really has facilitated me in learning. And when we don’t have anytime to visit Egypt, we can take an Arabic course on line.
Thank u Arab Academy. You have opened my mind to improve my Arabic more and more. See u next (soon).

Bridget Smith, TeacherBritish Council, Agouza, January 2007
I have found my lessons at the Arabic Academy both enjoyable and satisfying. Because of my work commitments, it wasn’t possible for me to enrol in the regular classes offered by the Academy. Despite this, every effort has been made to program private classes which meet my needs and are conducted at a mutually convenient time. This flexibility and desire to meet the particular needs of each student is a trademark of the Academy.
The classes are conducted in a relaxed environment, and the teachers are very encouraging, inspiring confidence whilst building on skills. The content of the courses is varied and the language is largely functional. The colloquial Egyptian courses, in particular those focusing on problems in society, provide good opportunities for discussion while offering insights into the culture at the same time.
The Modern Standard Arabic courses are demanding, but students are encouraged to work at their own pace. I was pleased to see that these courses incorporated opportunity for recycling vocabulary, and the topics were interesting.
The Arabic Academy is a professional language school which offers classes in a friendly supportive environment at a competitive rate. However, the real reason I’ll continue my classes here is because I love them!

Karen Arnold, PhD (cantab), January 2007
The onsite teaching program at Arab Academy is excellent. The program incorporates both the online study material (available world-wide via the internet) and professional instructors from Arab Academy's highly trained teaching staff. The onsite program offers individualized attention to each student so that students may progress at their own pace. During each intensive daily session four qualified instructors rotate hourly to work individually with the students. This allows students to hear Arabic spoken in different tones of voice by both men and women native speakers. Arab Academy offers intensive programs in both classical Arabic and colloquial Arabic. I studied both classical and colloquial during a one month session in Cairo. The instruction covered four main areas: useful expressions encountered in daily life, vocabulary buildling exercises, grammar and conversation. The instruction I received in all four categories was superior. Anyone serious about learning either classical or colloquial Arabic would be better spending three months at the Arab Academy than spending two years in univerisity classes. The Arab Academy also offers an optional learning experience that takes students to places of historical and cultural interest. The student is accompanied by a professional language instructor to a site in Cairo. The student is then able to practice speaking the language both with the instructor and with local people in Cairo. The instructor is able to help the student along in the early stages of language learning. This proved to be an invaluable experience both in regard to learning more about Cairene culture and in learning to feel at ease speaking in everyday situations in Egypt. Whether you are studying Arabic at the university or grade school level, or perhaps need Arabic for business or government purposes, I believe that the Arab Academy onsite experience is the fastest and most high quality method of learning Arabic.

I came with my family to study Arabic in Arab Academy for 2 weeks. My daughters, who cannot speak Arabic prior to the on-site program, are now able to say simple sentences and greetings.
As for myself, the online program has given me a good foundation of Arabic Language but the 2 weeks on-site program has tremendously increased my fluency in the language within a short period.
The way AA conducts the course has pushed me beyond my limit. The small classes and use of IT have enhanced my learning experience. The professional teachers at Arab Academy have been very motivating and accommodating to our needs. Without a doubt, it has been a fruitful experience and has exceeded my expectations.
Thank you Arab Academy!

Sumartono, Construction Manager, Singapore – December 2006

Learning a new language can be a very difficult journey. With the help and assistance of the teachers at AA, I managed to overcome the initial difficulties in learning Arabic. The teaching facilities in AA made learning Arabic simple and with the additional dedication given by the teachers, it made the learning process fun and easy. In fact, the teachers go beyond the call of duty to send my daughter to the hospital when she fell ill and also paid the bill. Thank you Ustaz Darweesh for your generosity and kindness! And also not forgetting Ustaz Hazem and his family for their effort and time in arranging for our Qurban ritual in his hometown.
My two weeks at AA provide me with the necessary skill and foundation to learn the Arabic language.

Thank you to all the asatizah in AA!

Bill Meares, Los Angeles, California June - September 2006
I am an Arabic student who has been studying for about nineteen months. During this time I have learned a great deal about Arabic. In addition, I have learned a great deal about how to study Arabic. I realized early on that the vast majority of Western Arabic materials and approaches were sadly deficient. Even major programs, like one I attended at a prestigious language university, omitted major components of the Arabic language. For example, an illumination of case endings. But without these building blocks and others, like continuous exposure to elided letters, etc., the student will be lost. In an effort to fill the gaps in these materials and programs I conducted considerable research. In each case, some component of the Arabic language was missing. I could not find a single source of instruction that encompassed the entire Arabic package. That is until I found the Arab Academy in Cairo Egypt.
After online enrolment in Arabic 101 at the Arab Academy, I knew it was different. I felt a tremendous feeling of relief as I learned more about the program. All of the issues that had frustrated me in the past were carefully addressed in practical ways in their curriculum and approach. For example, the ability to hear native speakers on demand with accompanying text, single word and sentence definitions on demand, and pronunciation of elided letters in sentences. Advancements like full verb morphology for every vocabulary word with audio on demand are invaluable and simply unavailable anywhere else. When accompanied with their expert tutors using voice over IP, the results are beyond compare. It was clear that the program managers and staff had carefully considered problems confronting Arabic students and implemented effective solutions for them. In addition, I felt personally engaged with the staff who at all times worked hard to ensure my needs were met. The result has been a rapid, rewarding, and enjoyable acquisition of Arabic.
For these reasons I did not hesitate to invest the money I had saved in a study abroad program in the Arab Academy. Last August I was very fortunate to be able to spend six weeks in their school. I was immediately impressed by their ability to assess, monitor, and adjust on a daily basis. Any concerns were addressed and adjustments made without delay. For example, at one point I felt very deficient in the pronunciation of certain letters. The staff adjusted the schedule and curriculum for focused pronunciation practice until I was satisfied. Similarly, I was fogy about the grammar surrounding aspects of case endings. Without hesitation the staff adjusted classes and provided extra instruction to great effect. Their approach is not, "Here is what we have, what do you want?" Rather it is, "What do you need and we will make it happen." I took advantage of this flexibility with extra tutoring and cultural opportunities that are unavailable from any other source. For example, a drive to the Nile Delta hometown of one of the teachers. There we were welcomed by his friends and family, received a generous home prepared meal of traditional food, toured a grape farm and a Coptic Church; all in Arabic of course. Such experiences not only enrich one's Arabic but one's life as well.
Arab Academy's teachers are expert and experienced plus bring energy and limitless patience to class. The director is a true linguistic professional who is actively involved in the school's daily operations and personally makes sure each student's needs are being met. I cannot recommend the Arab Academy highly enough and look forward to my next opportunity to learn with my friends in Cairo.

Amy, US Government, graduate of Brigham Young University, June-August 2006
I have been to several Arabic study abroad programs, and the Arab Academy has been the best by far! I had 5 different teachers in my 3 months in the program, and every single one of them had different and skilled teaching styles. I was very happy with the set-up of the program; I had particular interests, and they gave me classes and materials that fit those interests. The teachers are quite willing to work with you to get a program that you want. Also, I found the materials that they used excellent and I was impressed with the way that they combined technology along with tried and true teaching methods and materials.
I had very positive learning experiences while I was in the program, and I can't gush enough about how upbeat everyone is—you feel a desire to learn because the teachers are eager to be there and teach you. The classes are small and intense—I learned more in my 3 months of studying at the Academy than I learned in the past year of study! Speaking Arabic really clicked for me there mainly because of the teacher's infinite patience with me and the fact that there is a no-English policy which is strictly followed (for those who aren't in the beginning levels, anyhow).
In sum, I would encourage ANYONE to come! This study abroad program is definitely the best bang for your buck anywhere!

Nami Ishihara, from United States, July2006
I took the on-site course and tutoring program for two months during summer 2006. Class sizes are small, teachers are enthusiastic about teaching, and study materials are tailored for each level. Because it is such a small school, I received individual attention that would not be possible elsewhere, and the atmosphere at the school is informal and friendly. On the whole I highly recommend the program--I learned as much in two months at the Academy as I did in one year of coursework in the U.S.

Stefanie, a German Language teacher: July2006
The arrangement of the lessons were very individual and personal. I enjoyed the time to study here very much, all teachers are very helpful, and I think I learnt a lot! Thanks a lot for all !!!

Mark, United States Government: June 2006

I studied classical Arabic in 1988 for six months and lived in Kuwait for two years and Qatar for two years. In both places, I continued efforts to learn Arabic, however, I studied Gulf dialect. I strongly recommend the Arab Academy to my colleagues upon returning to the United States. Both the classroom portion and the on line course are the very best I have encountered. I will attempt to return next year to study at the academy again.

The Arab Academy teachers are the best Arabic instructors I have had the pleasure of learning from. They are very patient and work very hard with students. In addition, I consider both to be very good men and friends. I am very happy over my experience at the Arab Academy and in Egypt.

Thank you for the instruction.

Amber (An extremely happy mother!!!) from the United Kingdom: June 2006

I am writing to express my gratitude to you and your staff, for providing my son with this excellent learning experience. May Allah (SWT) truly reward you for your efforts and those who help run this excellent institute.

Both Sheikh Mahmood and Sheikh Omar proved to be extremely professional teachers and were always accommodating towards our sons needs. They showed that there teaching abilities were outstanding regardless of the age of their pupil. Mashallah!!! My son even enjoyed the delicious teas Sheikh Omar prepared!!!

Our only regret is that we wish Musa could have had longer with you. Inshallah, if we are given the opportunity to come to Egypt we will certainly use your institute again. Jazakallah Khair for all that you have done.

Mustafa, carpet trader graduate of Bilkent University from Turkey: February 1 to May 30, 2006

When I first came to Arab Academy, I did not know anything more than alphabet. I was was quite worried when listening to Arabic conversations since the pronounciation of Arabic is different from western languages. However, the program offered by Arab Academy (AA) is quiet well done. It makes you progress step by step quickly. You can actually feel the progress that is happening to you! You find that you can express yourself betterand better every week, even every day. I have received Arabic language in Bilkent university/Ankara many years ago. However, I guarantee that every day of education that I had in AA was much better that a week of education at my university. And the level (Arabic 202) that I have reached in 4 months is such that I can translate all I am writing here in Modern Standard Arabic, which is the official language of 22 Arab countries.

Regarding the instructors, they are quiet friendly, talented, skillful and joyful. They explain arabic from arabic. This style of education creates a chance for the students to realize new structures in Arabic easily and increase the speed of education. The students are being forced to speak Arabic and explain all they want in Arabic, which creates the opportunity to learn practical daily MSA. This is truly an immersion program in Arabic.

When I first arrived to Cairo, I understood nothing from Aljazeera (one of the famous television channels in themiddle east). However now, after 4 months of starting from scratch, I can claim that I can understand more than 60% of the news.

I strongly recommend every person to study at AA since I believe it is the best in the field of teaching Arabic. Thanks to the family of Arab Academy for everything they did to me!!!

I've wanted to start learning Arabic for a long time but my busy schedule and fear of such a complex language prevented me from doing so until I discovered Arab Academy online. I signed up for their beginners course Arabic 100, after all I thought I have to start somewhere. I was enchanted by the online program and convinced there are no better ways to learn a language than being in the country I decided to sign up for their onsite program. In all I spent three months in Cairo where I've studied Fousha Arabic. Today I am capable of reading and carrying a casual conversation in Fousha which I firmly believe I would not have been able to achieve in the same time frame without Arab Academy. The teachers are extremely competent and patient and were always willing to accomodate the lessons to my needs. It is an intense program that is worth every penny and although my first month might have been a bit frustrating I find myself wanting to know more and more... I am now looking forward to continuing my lessons online and speaking to my teachers with the online speaking course and possibly return some day to learn the colloquial language... Thumbs up to Arab Academy!

Charlotte, a video artist from New York filming an Iraqi play in Cairo: March 2006
I signed up at the Arab Academy as a complete beginner, and a beginner with a busy schedule of filming in the afternoons and evenings. In spite of the Academy's highly organized and full schedule they were able to accomodate my shcedule and they were flexible enough to work with me in spite of my inablity to spend full time on the course.. which is necessarily rigorous and demanding. I felt that I was in highly competent hands with the talented teachers, and I appreciated their powerfully positive attitude with what is decidedly a difficult task especially given the fact that I only had a month to schedule. For that reason also I liked the idea of a school with which I could continue my studies when I return to the states and while I am travelling. The whole experience here has been a positive one in spite of the fact that I have only just reached probably the most frustrating stage! It's nice to know that they are available on line. I will definitly continue the work that I have begun here.

Chris, a journalist and graduate of Georgetown University, from the United States: attended the following sessions: December 2005 - March 2006

My studies at the Arab Academy encompassed three months of lessons in intermediate to advanced Fousha Arabic, which included newspaper articles and other media, short stories, and poetry. I also participated in the tutor/companion program. In short, the program is excellent and I will count my time in Egypt as one of my most rewarding experiences. The teachers at the Arab Academy and the Administration are highly professional and extremely effective. The lessons were also geared towards my interests and needs. I was also very impressed with the tutor/companion program, which provided me with a valuable opportunity to visit important sites in Cairo while at the same time practicing my Arabic with my teacher.

After three months of study, I feel confident in my ability to read and understand advanced texts and to communicate effectively in a variety of situtations. Indeed, I was so impressed by the Arab Academy that I look forward to contiuing my studies online from the US, this time focussing on Colloquial Arabic.

Karin, a pshychologist from the United States, Connecticut: attended the following session: February 2006.

I had a short visit here as it was only two weeks, but I went away with a lot. Most important for me was the patience of my teachers, they were all superb. I initially had some fears about speaking to another person in Arabic, knowing that my pronounciation was not correct but I got over that fear quickly. I was also concerned that I would not understand when I was spoken to, many times I didn't (and still don't) but the teachers used many different techiques to get their messages across. I found that when I returned to my hotel, I was not afraid to speak with the hotel employees and heard encourageing words from everyone I spoke to. After two weeks, I am finding that everyting is beginning to click, much to the relief of my teachers. Also, the grammer classes are not as intimidating as they once were. Even though the classes were sometimes very difficult, I looked forward to them every day. The homework helped to reinforce what I had learned and also brought out new questions for the next day.

I also had the pleasure of utilizing a tutor to accompany me to the local sites. He encouraged me to speak about the things that we did and what we saw. As I struggled to remember vocabulary and proper sentence structure, his patience astounded me.

I look forward to continuing with my studies at home with the addition of a speaking course and In-sha-Allah, I will return again next year.

Muhammad Wada Muazu Lere, Economist at the Central Bank of Nigeria, Abuja, Nigeria: attended the following session: October 2005.

I attended the Novice Mid Course from 2nd to 31st October, 2005 at Arab Academy Cairo. The course was very good and useful. At the end of the course i was able to read and understand the Arabic language. I commend the Academy for the excellent teaching aids and the experienced teachers. Please keep it up.

Shuaihu Saidu, Accountant at the Central Bank of Nigerian, Abuja, Nigeria: attended the following session: October 2005.

My visit to Egypt has been very fruitful. Within a period of three weeks, I have learned so much in fact I can teach qawaidul nahawi and sarf. My Arabic vocabulary has improved significantly. However, I still speak Arabic with difficulty that I believe would be overcome with time and a little effort on my side.

The environment was very conducive for adult education, while the facilitators very resourceful and friendly. I am looking forward to the advance diet of the program.

Megan Carey, from the United States, New York: attended the following sessions: June - July 2005.

I spent two months with the Arab Academy and can honestly say that it has been one of the most rewarding experiences. I have studied Arabic at the University level for roughly two years and not until my time at the Arab Academy have I felt comfortable communicating in Arabic. The care of the teachers and the intensity of the program really pushed me to sharpen my communication abilities. Having studied Arabic solely through the Al-kitaab book series at my University, I was looking for a program that could provide me with a different approach to learning Arabic. I am truly astonished by how much I have learned through Arab academy. Firstly, because of the size of the school the classes are extremely small. The first month I was in class with one other student and the second month by myself. This personal attention allowed the teachers to truly focus on my needs and concerns. The texts and other materials used in class are wonderful and are taken from authentic material. Working on these texts in class made me feel comfortable enough to start reading books in Arabic by myself. Secondly, one of the true treasures of the Arab academy program is the tutor program. I met with my tutor four days a week for about four hours. The first month we spent time visiting many of the wonderful cultural sites of Cairo. There is nothing that can compare to this experience as I had the chance to visit these sites with a true Cairene. The second month, my tutor and I chose to spend more time in doors reading and conversing in Arabic (mainly because of the heat of the summer). The tutor was always up to any of my suggestions and I was the true director of this program. The incorporation of the tutor program with my studies in the classroom allowed me to apply what I learned in class to real world experience. The intensity of the program had me speaking and thinking in Arabic so much that I even found it hard sometimes to write emails to my parents in English! I would recommend this program to anyone of any age and language level but also strongly recommend this program to University students; who really want to focus on improving their speaking and listening skills.

Being a University students there are several summer programs available both abroad and within the United States that cater towards American University students. The Arab academy without a doubt, even though it is a fairly new program, is surely quite a competition for any of these programs.

Debra Smith, an English language teacher in the United States, Missouri: attended the following session: June 2005.

I spent a month at Arab Academy in Cairo after having been an online student there for about a year and a half. Knowing how excellent the online courses and the staff are, my expectations for the on-site experience were very high. I am happy to say that the program more than met my expectations: The lessons were rigorous and intense, but the work was exhilarating and productive; the teachers were more demanding than I could have imagined but so kind and delightful and patient; the surroundings at school were welcoming and comfortable.

The cultural program was also outstanding. The many hours with my tutor exploring various sites around Cairo and attending artistic performances enhanced my entire experience exponentially; being with a native Cairene who wasn’t an English-speaking tour guide gave me a different view of the city and the culture than I ever could have gotten visiting Egypt as a tourist and kept me actively immersed in Arabic for most of my waking hours to my enormous benefit. Since I'm supposed to be writing about the language program, I won't even start on how much I love Cairo!

The intensive on-site courses are advertised as covering a semester’s work in a month, and that’s true. But functioning in Arabic for a month wasn’t just a matter of accelerated study; it was transformative. Everyone’s experience will be different of course, depending on language level, personality, etc., but here are a few things that happened for me in Cairo:
• I went to Egypt terrified of conversing in Arabic and feeling that I couldn’t understand anything anyone said unless I could mentally translate every word. Being forced to listen extensively with no lapses into English, I learned to relax a little and take in what I could, and I discovered that after the first few minutes with any speaker I would find myself absorbing the Arabic without mentally translating, and being able to converse with more fluency than I ever thought I would be capable of. I still misunderstand more than I wish on the first try, but I've improved a lot and intend to keep working on listening online.
• Likewise I worried about my pronunciation, but having to deal with shopkeepers, koshary sellers, and cab drivers in addition to teachers every day forced me to enunciate more clearly, and I was amazed to be almost universally understood. The teachers were great about correcting my speech in ways that didn’t disrupt my efforts to communicate.
• My reading was very slow before I came, and I was totally dependent on my Arabic-to-English dictionary, feeling that I had to know the meaning of every word in order to understand a text. Thanks to the huge amount of reading my class did (more than I ever would have been optimistic enough to expect of myself on my own), I now read much faster, and thanks to the way we looked at texts in class and the patience and imagination of my teachers, I am now much more able to infer meaning from context and avoid the dictionary except as a last resort, so I find reading both easier and more pleasant and will be able to continue effectively from home. (And I bought an Arabic-to-Arabic dictionary and learned to use it.)
• Being in the culture allowed me to overhear real conversations between native speakers of Arabic, something that rarely happens in an American Arabic classroom or on most of our streets, and I was thrilled to find that I could get the gist of most conversations and sometimes even participate.

My Arabic still has a long way to go, but the month in Cairo convinced me that real fluency is possible if I work hard enough. I have returned to the U.S. with a detailed plan for pushing myself in the coming year as hard as my on-site teachers did, and even before I took my final exams at 3 alif al-Nabataat Street, I had taken the fabled drink from the Nile and blocked off a month next summer on my calendar to return inshallah to Arab Academy in Cairo, the Mother of the World.

This is the richest experience one can get. The school is located in a beautiful neighborhood, the group of teachers is extremely experienced and the course well prepared. I particularly enjoyed the conversation teacher who was with me every other day for a few hours after class and spoke ONLY in Arabic. That was interesting! We actually visited a few places in Cairo, in Arabic of course.

I rented an apartment to be able to speak in Arabic as much as I could with the doorman, the maid, the neighbors, the stores, the taxi drivers and that was a lot of fun.

I made a lot of progress both in speaking and understanding and I am definitely planning first to continue on line when back home, and then come back, God willing, very soon.

My Learning Experience At Arab Academy
I spent a period of five weeks studying in Cairo, with Arab Academy. These five weeks were more beneficial than my last few years studying Arabic. I found the teachers and the style of teaching very effective. Initially things were a little hard as I was not use to learning solely in Arabic, but after a week or two I found myself understanding more and more and relying less and less on sign language.

I enjoyed the conversional aspects of the course best, because you were able to practice what was taught in the classroom on the streets. The teachers were very patient and encouraging. After classes, you are able to access all the courses online from anywhere ( no excuses for not doing homework) The work load was intense but when you take time out to study this is to be expected. Now back in the UK, I believe that the grounding that I received at Arab Academy has served me well. I intend to carry on with my studies here in the UK.

I would recommend anyone to Arab Academy, it was an experience of a life time.I believe that you can only truely learn and experience the flavour of the Arabic Language in an Arabic country and where better than Egypt.
